Breathing with the Memento Mori
Breathing in the Memento Mori is an installation that was installed in 2022 in Studio 3 at George Fox University. Memento Mori is a phrase that originates from ancient Greece which translates to a reminder of death. This installation is a reflection of that phrase; a space that allows the viewer to sit peacefully with the understanding of death. The installation has a soft area in front of a grave stone that allows viewers to lay down and rest while looking up at the vast amount of white mushrooms above. This situation mimics how one might be while they have passed with their body under the soil. Other elements that are present in the piece that also touch on the idea of the end of life is the lite incense that slowly burns out leaving the room with a smoky scent and the live tulips that throughout time in the piece withers until they are nothing left but decomposing material. All these different elements are brought together to invite the viewer to have a moment of meditation in a safe calming space to think about a very real part of life.
